Sony’s new WF-1000XM3 earbuds bring the industry-leading noise-cancelling technology they employ in their over-ear headphones into a tiny, ‘true wireless stereo’ package. Seems pretty exciting on the surface, but audiophiles will be disappointed to learn there’s no support for any form of high-quality audio.
The WF-1000XM3 don’t even support AptX – let alone AptX HD or LDAC. The omission of the LDAC codec is notable as while it’s supported by all modern Android devices, Sony own the rights and generally only Sony headphones boast LDAC support. Anyone hoping for a pair of truly wireless, tiny noise-cancelling earbuds will have to keep waiting.
Sony have commented that adding LDAC support would drain the little batteries too quickly, so it wasn’t viable for the WF-1000XM3. The Walkman Blog have also speculated that there’s very little room inside the headphones to add the dedicated chips LDAC or AptX would require.
